| Boat Navigation for the Rest of Us. | Capt. Brogdon Bill | International Marine | |
| Synopsis. 'Boat Navigation for the Rest of Us' is the only book that teaches navigation the way small-boat skippers actually navigate: by combining electronic aids like GPS and radar with commonsense visual piloting skills and simple chartwork. This second edition covers important developments in electronic navigation, including dramatic improvements in GPS accuracy, the growing popularity of electronic charts and plotting systems, and the increasing availability of navigation information over the internet. It's a full course in navigation plus a whole toolbox of the little-known tips and shortcuts to deal with the real-life situations without a slide rule. | |||
| Celestial Navigation | Cunliffe Tom | Fernhurst Books | |
| Synopsis. Now in full colour. Covers sextant technique, how to read the tables and apply them and how to fix a position in mid-ocean. Recommended for the RYA/DTP Yachtmaster Ocean course. | |||
| Celestial Navigation A Step-by-step Self-teaching Course. | Smith Gerry | Adlard Coles Nautical | |
| Synopsis. Celestial Navigation is a self-teaching book designed for those with a grounding in coastal navigation. Dealing first with the broad concepts of astro-navigation, Gerry Smith leads on to develop practice using tables to solve navigation problems as they apply to the average sailor. Meanwhile, the reader is able to evaluate his or her performance by the programmed learning format of the book. Gerry Smith has used this formula very successfully in his previous best selling book, Coastal Navigation and readers will come to value the pattern adopted throughout: learn; test; assess; relearn; progress. | |||

| Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen | Blewitt Mary | Adlard Coles Nautical | |
| Synopsis. This book has been a bestseller for over fifty years, and has been thoroughly updated regularly. There is a vital need for traditional skills when things go wrong at sea: batteries can fail, aerials go overboard, and electronics often get wet. This edition contains worked examples related to the current nautical almanac and air tables. The only mathematics involved are straight forward addition and subtraction - so chart-table skills can be easily mastered. | |||

| Electronic Navigation | Jones Colin | Helmsman Books | |
| Synopsis. Electronic navigation provides a basic understanding of the use of modern pilotage techniques and equipment. Technology now allows an almost pinpoint accuracy, irrespective of time of day or season of the year, and with total disregard to weather conditions, meaning that modern electronic systems have become an indispensable aid for all craft that take to sea. Aimed at beginners and those seeking a refresher course in the latest navigational skills, the book covers radio and satellite navigation, the electronic compass, the autopilot, and radar and its usage. | |||
| From Sails to Satellites | Williams J. E. D. | Oxford University Press. | |
| Synopsis.
The Origin and Development of Navigational Science. For many centuries men navigated on long voyages without knowing or caring where they were for much of the time. The ancient Greeks made crude calculations of latitude from solar observations. Today's satellite systems are within the means of amateur sailors and give position, accurate to perhaps thirty metres, virtually instantly. The history of navigational science offers vivid insights into the areas of human endeavour which have driven it. Discoverers such as Columbus needed to locate and claim distant lands for their sovereigns and paymasters. Merchants in a world of expanding horizons and trade needed accurate navigation for efficient and reliable shipping. Rapidly developing air travel demanded accurate and quick navigation in very difficult conditions. The deadly objects of the military in targeting missiles and sailing submarines in radio silence offer very particular challenges to navigation systems today. In servicing these needs, navigational science has made use of very diverse scientific discoveries starting with simple geometry and calculations in dead- reckoning and the use of magnetic compasses. More complicated mathematics and more accurate mechanisms are required for astronomical navigation. The properties of gyroscopes are exploited in the self-contained world of inertial guidance systems. Most recently computing power, micro-electronics, and satellites have been combined to give the startling accuracy and speed of current systems. This is a fascinating tale which skillfully interweaves the threads of science, trade, exploration, and warfare. It is written with care and insight by an author who had more than 50 years' experience of and curiosity about the human need to know position and course, the need to navigate. | |||
